Conventions of music videos

Conventions are things that are common in something. Here i will be looking into some of the conventions that are used in music. I will then look into the conventions of some specific genres.

General music conventions.

Usually some narrative lyrics.
The main singer/group is shown consistently throughout the music video.
The singers usually look directly at the camera to make it feel more personal like he is talking directly to you.
Lots of miss-en-scene used to either strengthen the point they're trying to make or to make the singer look better. Usually reflects the mood of the song. Sometimes it has other reasons for miss-en-scene but it always has some relation towards the music video.
The music video has an order of what happens (good chronology)
All have good lip authentic syncing
Words usually fit the part of the music video being played.
Main character is usually the singer.
Have different special effects and transitions that relate to both the song and music video.

Conventions of a Metal music genre.

Most are performances done in different places with the whole band performing.
Performance are usually headbanging to show their emotions and the anger that they have.
Crowed shouting/screaming loudly.
Mostly focused on the lead singer however close ups of all the band are shown.
Lots of attention is being paid to what they were and how they look. Usually the stereotypical metal look, sometimes scary masks and devil like clothing is used.
Editing that fits in with the music video( fast paced editing with parts of the lyrics that are sung fast)
Lighting is mostly dark and there's lots of lights flashing.

Conventions of a Pop music genre.

Location usually a happy place(i.e by the pool, beach, warm sunny days)
Most of focus is on the lead singers.
Lots of things going on in the background, usually girls walking, dancing, showing of cool items like cars and motorcycles.
Artist changes their clothing a lot and appearances.
Artist is mostly singing and not playing any instruments.
Lots of close ups of the singer showing their facial expressions and how 'good' they look.

Conventions of a Indie music genre.

Usually attention is put towards the clothing (polos, plimsoles, check shirts, jeans etc is worn) it's very casual.
Usually a mixture of performance, narrative, singing and dancing.
Lead singer is the main character. Shown mostly shown throughout the music video.
Editing is usually quite fast paced to match the music.
Not many effects and transitions used.

Conventions of a hip-hop/rap music genre.

Lots of lyrics mostly rapped and actual singing is usually done in the chorus.
Urban location. Mostly in neighborhoods where there's lots of gangs and graffiti drawn everywhere.
Baggy clothes are worn mostly tracksuits and jewelery, lots of 'bling'.
Always show one or more of these: girls, money, cars, big houses and clubs.
Sometimes the music is sad but mostly its fast paced happy 'cool' music.

Conventions of a classical music genre.

Locations are usually shown of nature and other beautiful scenery.
Slow paced.
Sometimes it has no lyrics.
Instruments played are usually string type instruments like violin, cello, sometimes guitar and a piano is usually played.

Conventions of a love song music genre.

Usually a narrative about love and what has happened to the singer.
Slow paced song supported by a slow paced music video,
Signifiers of love (i.e the colour red and roses)
Lots of close-ups of the singer, showing their facial expressions and their feelings towards what they are singing about. Also makes it more personal as its like the singer is advising the audience and telling them the story.
